Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refine your centering, this course offers a structured path from a lump of clay to a finished, functional piece of art. Axel brings a unique perspective to the craft—combining the precision of a 20-year IT career with a deep, chemistry-backed passion for glazes and form.

What You'll Master

The course is designed to build your skills progressively, ensuring you find your "rhythm" on the wheel.

  • Week 1 - The Foundation Master the essential mechanics. You'll learn the "Big Three": centering the clay, opening the base, and pulling the walls to create height.

  • Week 2: Finding Form The goal is the classic cylinder. This fundamental shape is the gateway to all pottery, teaching you control, wall thickness, and vertical stability.

  • Week 3: Expansion & Expression Shift your focus to the bowl. Axel will demonstrate how to guide clay into intentional curves. Plus, enjoy a slip decoration demo to see how color and texture can transform a surface.

  • Week 4: The Final Touch Your choice! Dive into slip-decorating your final pieces to make them truly yours, or spend the extra time perfecting your throw.

    Note: Pieces thrown in Week 4 will be finished with a classic transparent glaze to ensure they are fired and ready for use.

He specialises in tableware, formulates his own glazes after two years studying glaze chemistry, and sells his work through Gaia Wholefoods in Leamington Spa, where he's now based. For the past year, he's been teaching wheel-throwing and hand-building from his own studio."
