Abstract Mark Making & Painting Workshop

Join Jaimie for a relaxed, hands-on workshop focused on mark making, colour, and intuitive abstract painting. Spend a few hours immersed in the process, experimenting freely and creating a series of expressive abstract works in a supportive, informal setting.

During the session you'll explore a range of techniques for creating abstract art, including blending, scraping, and splatter. You'll work with brushes, palette knives, and a selection of experimental tools designed to help you loosen up and discover new ways of making marks. The emphasis is on process, exploration, and developing confidence with colour and abstraction rather than creating a finished "perfect" piece. This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some painting experience.

What's Included
• Tea and coffee
• Practice paper prepared with one layer of gesso
• A large sheet of prepared paper for creating mini paintings
• A range of experimental mark-making tools

Jaimie Volkaerts is known for her atmospheric paintings rich in movement and
energy. Working primarily with oils, she creates expressive abstract works that
balance soft, fluid blends with textured focal areas, encouraging the viewer to slow
down and engage.
A signature feature of Jaimie’s practice is her use of the palette knife to build depth,
texture, and intricate mark making. Each painting begins with a clear intention for
colour and composition, before evolving organically through process and
experimentation.
This workshop draws directly from Jaimie’s own approach to painting, adapted into
an accessible and playful format that encourages exploration, intuition, and
confidence with mark making.
