Research Project Results

Lighthaus Arts conducted an extensive research project to understand the needs of the local creative community and develop a sustainable model for the arts hub.

The research involved venue visits across the UK, consultation workshops with artists and community organisations, and a comprehensive local survey. The aim was to identify best practices from successful arts spaces, determine local demand for creative facilities, and ensure the new hub aligns with Leamington Spa’s broader cultural and economic strategies.

Key elements of the research included:

  • Visits to thriving arts spaces such as East Street Arts in Leeds, Open Source Arts, and Art4Space in London, to assess sustainable models and best practices.
  • Community consultation sessions with local charities, arts organisations, and individuals facing barriers to creative practice.
  • A public questionnaire with 191 responses, revealing strong interest in improved arts facilities, affordable studio spaces, and community-driven projects.

Main Findings

  1. Strong Demand for Creative Spaces – A significant number of local artists struggle with access to affordable studio space. The research found that many existing facilities have long waitlists, demonstrating the need for more accessible options.

  2. Need for Community Engagement – The research highlighted that arts spaces play a crucial role in mental health, social cohesion, and economic revitalisation. Respondents expressed a desire for workshops, networking events, and mentorship opportunities.

  3. Sustainability and Financial Viability – Many successful arts spaces integrate multiple revenue streams, including membership schemes, retail sales, and event hire, to reduce reliance on grants. The new hub will adopt a similar model to ensure long-term stability.

  4. Inclusivity and Accessibility – Feedback from community organisations, such as Emmaus and Parents in Mind, underscored the importance of creating a space that accommodates individuals facing financial, social, or health-related challenges. Flexible pricing, free events, and partnerships with support groups will be a key focus.

  5. Revitalisation of Leamington’s Old Town – The Stoneleigh Arms' transformation will not only provide a cultural hub but also stimulate footfall, benefiting surrounding businesses and enriching the local economy.
