E C Clare

My abstract life work is characterised by bold and loose marks representing the human form. The colours, inks and acrylic, at times I mix more deliberately, at times more accidentally. I merge palettes, pour paint into paint. I retain the mother colour through a series of work, connecting images and experiences with this multi-coloured grey thread. These pictures are finished in the moment, underworked. Left raw. Take them and make them your own.

I paint as I want to be - free, as we have been as children. I like to see the marks, the brush strokes and splashes, and the imperfection. I like to see the lightness and the looseness and what remains of my connection with the model when the time in the studio is long past. If you choose to linger and look, you might see shapes you like, space you want, energy, flesh, sex, love, perhaps peace. You will see moments distilled.

Sometimes I wonder if I prescribe or describe when I paint. Perhaps both - creating what I want - projecting - and, at times, depicting what I have. I am, more and more, painting from the inside out. What I feel is what you see. I have been painting detailed layered portraits for a long time now, using logic and decision, and oil on linen. And now, coming from somewhere other within me, are these visceral, energetic paintings.
