He has presented many papers at international conferences; he is the author of two books that examine the meaning of clay and firing. He was awarded his PhD by Manchester Metropolitan University. His undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Literature was awarded by Warwick University. He was a Senior Academic in the Ceramics Department at Wolverhampton University for thirty years.

He was the elected representative on the global Council of the IAC (NGO in association with UNESCO), representing the UK, Ireland and Benelux countries from 2016-2025.The history of the work commences with the Japanese raku tradition of tea-bowls (chawan). The pieces have been influenced by the ways they were handled in “Tea Ceremony” (Cha no Yu) – objects passed around to be appreciated as fleeting memories of experience. In this current work there is only a passing reference to function; instead of tea, they can now carry meaning, particularly concerning the nature of handmaking, which I consider as emblematic of our human nature.

The marks on the surface of the clay reference the indentations and creases inscribed on the human body, garnered in living. The pieces carry some of my ideas, but they are also vessels for the containment of the imagination and enjoyment of the audience.
